Paint

I took my time and was very patient. And it paid off in a finish that while not exceptional, is acceptable. I am talking about the top plate for the new amplifier, of course.

While dealing with my other spring chores, I’ve been working to get the finish applied to the amplifier’s top plate. While not perfect, I believe it is acceptable enough for me to proceed.

I keep referring to the new amplifier as the 6V6 “Curly Maple” Amplifier. But is it really?

I managed to steal a little time over Easter to do a some work in the shop. The chassis for the new 6V6 “Curly Maple” Amplifier is coming along nicely.

While spray painting some metal this week a funny thing happened. During the painting session, the hair on my arms began to stand on end to the extent that it was readily apparent that something strange was happening. This led me to perform some investigations.

After my mistake with the finish, the top and front plates for the 6L6 SE-UL are now back to bare metal. Now begins the “Great Paint Hunt”.

Remember yesterday when I said “There were a couple of finish blemishes which needed to be corrected. I accomplished that shortly after the above pictures were taken”? It looks like I messed up!

So I’ve had the chassis and metal done for the 6CY7 V2 amp since the 4th of July. It has now been a full 13 days and… the paint is not yet fully cured. It is hard for me to remember it ever taking this long for a semi-gloss enamel on metal to cure hard enough to begin assembly work. Obviously the manufacturer has changed the solvent makeup of the paint I use. Time to find another manufacturer. In the mean time, I’ve been working on other things.
